Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Jekyll

When Cappelbaum wakes,
His eyes fill with blood.

Blood peeks through white window slats,
Creeps twixt floorplanks,
Weeps from taps.

Cappelbaum showers in blood,
(Thankfully warm the red flood.)


As he towels off, bookstacks stumble—
Maus, Maus, komm heraus.
He searches for culprits, finds none.

Cappelbaum places call. He
Cannot place roar in room tone.

Fitter comes suddenly midst
Twelve and five, severs cord,
Makes surly repairs, shakes hand.


Cappelbaum wonders, what
Difference? Shande, Schuld

As he caresses palm wracked
With solitude, each crease,
Not one finger forgotten.

When— finish remain eager garage
thrive reopen drop search thought


silk blast bronze —ere he raises
Chalice to mouth, "…lovely day!"
It shatters, true to each drop.
