This poem appears in The Love of a Good Man.

For Paul

when i first fell in love with you
a decade and a half ago

it was a manic day
spent looking for the golden gate

a comedy of errors and of laughs
(we'd still used paper maps

you drove and I drank coffee
taking us in circles

oh  i had loved you sight unseen
on icq and irc

in luxembourg and oregon
in kyoto  matsumoto

you helm the bus
i wrestle with my japanese

and in that boarding house we joke
then sleep (on separate beds

I am not here in this cafe
on this dark rainy lovely day

in a motel somewhere
in california I rest—

       late night  a polished bathroom
       air is wired to light

       you sleep out there
       and I here write
